The University of Western Kentucky conducted experiments with albino squirrels several decades ago. When it came time to release the squirrels, they did so on campus. The albino squirrels bred with the local population and now there are white squirrels with brown eyes all over the campus. I was lucky enough to have my camera with me when going to pick up my daughter from camp there. I had never seen one of these, was a nice treat.

We talked to a young boy who was nearby and he mentioned the reason they flourish there is because they have no natural predators. Low & behold we saw a few huge cats on campus. So much for that theory.

This is very interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. My white squirrel was seen in the Michigan U.P. about 50 miles west of Marquette on Lake Superior (a very long way from Western Kentucky). No one I know in that area had ever seen one before this little cutie showed up.
