Hiya..
Welcome to DPC.. .
I'm going through all the new DPCers and dropping a comment each for all that's joined from recently..

Hope you have a pleasent stay here.. :)
Cheers

Well.. enough about the date stamp and light switch..
You've got a good angle.. the thing might want to work on first would be on the framing.. I'll worry about the exposure and lighting later..

I would put the camera on a tripod, set it on timer, use a really low shutter and small apperture.. on the lamp, off the flash and capture the ambience.. :)

Good first attempt.. :)

Oh dear. The datestamp is massively distracting (Outside of the challenge itself, I would turn that feature off, because you're blighting the pictures and the information is contained within the exif data so you don't even need the stamp.) Then you've got an angle that includes a light switch and the top right hand corner of a picture frame or similar. The lamp itself is kinda fuzzy along the left side, and very dark. The photo meets the challenge, but I'm still going to have to go low I'm afraid.

really bad choice to leave the date stamp on the photo. the subject is quite boring and the lighting is flat and uninspiring

Turning the date stamp off would improve this image.

I think this should ribbon because it is the only entry that has a date printed right on the photo. I give it decent score because it actually meets the challenge.

the date stamp is very very distracting

nice date ;)
Always happens in the first challenge...

Too much noise. Perhaps a different subject. It would be a good idea to turn off your date stamp.

Date stamp completely pulls away from this photo. Lighting is off a little seems a little gray.

Not that interesting to look at.

Intersting idea. The flash is distracting and the date stamp takes away from the photol

By now, you probably have heard enough about the date stamp so Ill hit on a few others. The lamp could have been placed to block the light switch. By moving the subject away from the backdrop you would eliminate some of the harsh shadow. There seems to be too many angles all at once which to me is distracting. Also, the doorframe doesn't add anything and should be cropped out.
Don't dispare and keep at it. There are photographers on this site that CAN and DO take the most mundane things and have the knowledge and equipment to turn them into works of art. For the rest of us mortals, we have to just keep our eyes open and our cameras ready and hope for the best while learning bits and pieces from others.
Good luck.

Please turn off the date stamp in your camera or crop it out

Uh-oh. I have a feeling you may be getting killed on this one. Not that it's a bad photo for this challenge -- but most dpc'ers are phobic about anything that looks like a dreaded snapshot, and I'm afraid the date screams "snapshot" for this one. I won't kill you because at least it meets the challenge and is not a dead straight on shot like lots of them here.

But going forward, little things like cropping out the corner of the door frame on the left. . .and certainly the date will go a long way towards improving your score. I hope it's not as bad for you as I fear :(

You want to remove the date stamp from the setting.
08/10/2006 06:26:50 AM
its always a good thing to take the date off, and the lamp might be better centered.

Ok..there are a couple of things you notice right off. First of course is the date stamp which I am sure everyone will comment on..it is a must to remove the date stamp. There is a corner of something black on the left side of the picture which is distracting, perhaps cropping that out would help. Also the background isn't flattering with your subject. The lamp idea may have potential but you just have to give it the proper enhancements & environment.

There is nothing that really stands out here and the date... Take the date out of the picture.
08/09/2006 06:24:59 PM
C'mon... You have the idea, not as many other photographers, but how could you possibly may think this is going to be rated well? What you should do first, turn off the "date" option in your camera next time, ok?
08/09/2006 04:28:55 PM
I guess you wanted to let us know when you took the photo.

I'm afraid that you'll be disqualified... no text can appear on the images.

Not sure about the date stamp

You will get some flack for this...trust me, I did it too!! It's a good choice, but try to play with lighting and composition. Nice attempt though! Oh...and don't let them discourage you, keep trying!

Try to eliminate the date next time. And please, read how to compress the image.
