So as expected, this image was hit fairly hard. I knew going in that it would be a stretch for some but it is an image I am happy about entering and in the end that's what counts. Sure high placements are nice but...
I spent quite a while getting my daughter to throw her hair back in a variety of speeds and ways. Took quite a few shots and many of them were really good. I chose this one because of the flamelike area at the top. It was a little soft from the motion but I think it really enhanced the impression of fire.
Editing was simple.
A little sat adjustment and some dodge and burn to enhance the lights and darks in the hair.
Neat image helped with the smooth look.
The cameo effect was achieved by using a faster than normal shutter speed with my studio flash. After trying out a few different settings, I discovered that the faster shutter speed did a nice job of isolating the face and hair. Lesson learned... don't be afraid to break the rules and experiment.
Thanks for all the great comments. They were greatly appreciated... :)

Nice interpretation of fire.....thinking outside of the box. I love this picture. |

Great job! the hair is a little blurred (due to motion) so a faster capture would have made this a sharper image |

A little overexposure in the face, but I love the movement of her hair. Very flame-like. |

Fantastic image! Great light, focus and model. With that said I don't see the fire. The challenge description was real clear on fire. So I can't in good conscience rate this as high as I would like merely because of the fact that there is no fire in the image. Capturing a portrait is one thing and capturing real FIRE is quite another. I wish you would have at least tried to capture fire with your image. I am sorry for this but I feel it only fair. 3

Jeesh this image is making me crazy. OK I see the fire yeah I get it and I changed my vote to 6 but that is it ...
OK last time I just can't help myself. It is a wonderful image but this is it 7

Great shot. I really like the composition of this and the out of the box thinking that works. I hope you arent getting dinged too hard for no actual flames. Bumping up one here. |

Might not do well for this challenge. But it is a superb artistic portrait. |

A bit too much of a shoehorn, but a lovely photo separate from the challenge. |

Seems possibly oversharpened. However, I LOVE the way the shoulder becomes part of the background. It reminds me of a bust, and therefore since a bust is not human I can forgive the oversharpened-ish skin texture. I do like the way the details show up in the hair so you probably made the right decisions as far as sharpening is concerned. As for meeting the challenge, it does not satisfy this as much as others do, but I think that it is close enough for me so I will not mark down. I like the pose very much and the warm colors - makes me think she is turning her face upwards towards a bright sun. If you were trying for a solid color background, you were not quite there - however, I LOVE the way that the background appears to be solid until you look at the image more, and then there are hidden shapes that appear. Overall I think this is a great photo and you did a great job of capturing the motion and the "fire" in the hair. |

Really like the pose here and the movement in the hair, on my screen there appear to be some red marks on the right hand side edge just up from the bottom that dont look right, other than that a nice image :) |

Man I love red hair, so bonus point from me. I would have loved if the hair was sharper. I'm guessing motion blur. At least you didn't try to overcompensate with some wicked USM. We all know this is gonna get voted down, but I'm voting extra points for creativity. 7 from me. I would have done higher if you could have frozen that hair completely. |

Great out-of-the-box thinking. Her hair really looks like fire, the way you caught it in motion. Best of luck - 10 |

I like the movelent in the hair and the lighting is fantastic...I expected to see more redheads in this challenge, but there are not too many, which I hope gives you an advantage...good luck |

I like how the hair looks like flames, though the highlights on the face are a bit too harsh for my liking. Good to see something in this challenge that's not on fire. |

very different perspective, but I like it. your model is very beautiful. |

nice idea, but too much post-processing, face looks painted, hair looks overshapened |

I'm gonna want to see the "HowTo" on this one.
