Thanks to all who looked at this photo and saw what I saw. We happened to be camping when this fire broke out and were able to go to a look-out point to view it. After we got home we found out that four of the firefighters fighting this 5 acre fire were killed in a helicopter crash. It is devastating to watch a fire like this burn but even more devastating to find out that people were killed while fighting it!
P.S. It was caused by a dry lightening strike... |

Nicely isolated subject. Good one. |

Nice editorial/photojournalistic image. Even though there's quite a bit of smoke around, it could almost appear as if the fire is starting right before our eyes. I love the contrast between the orange flames and the deep pine trees. I also like the rawness of the image. Maybe its just me but there's almost a visible wince to this shot where I can only think of destruction that'll soon engulf the rest of those trees. Nicely captured, I hope you were at a safe distance. I gave a 7 |

I love that in the calmness there is fury. |

As I said to someone else, I certainly hope you didn't start this for a photo.
Sad and scary. |

Eeek. I hope everything was okay.
Visually not too bad of a shot.. good colors and contrast. I love the deep, rich greens.
I think that the fire does not have enough focus however. When I look at this I see a nice photo of trees that happen to be on fire, instead of seeing "fire". Maybe a different cropping would have helped this - personally I would have been interested to see it cropped just to the left of the tree in the foreground (the one to the left of the fire area) to form a portrait-orientation, with the fire as more of a major element.
But then again, I think that so far I've seen a lot of shots of just fire. The fire in these shots is perhaps more dramatic visually but the fire does not have a context to provide any impact in my mind. This photo, however, will definitely stay with me. It makes me appreciate the *potential impact* that this fire could have on *all* that is around it, thus making the trees a hugely important part of this shot.
I thought I was going to mark you down and I am so glad that I took longer to think. Thank you for sharing this image. |

This is sublime. The single burning tree makes this menacing, a subtle threat, a promise of the destruction yet to come. Gorgeous. |

This is nice. It sure is meeting the challenge. But I think a tighter crop would have mad this more dramatic. 7

I thought about burning a forest for this challenge, but then decided it wasn't worth it. Kudos to you for having the guts. ;-) |
