Well my ideas for the Scene It challenge didnt work out - I will have to save them for later use. This is yet another variation on the Santa Maria in downtown Columbus (actually the 4th entry I have made with this boat in the pic one way or another). I hung out this time for almost two hours attempting different shots trying to find one that would do good as a silhouette. The water was cruddy and the sky didnt give me the colors I was looking for. But hopefully this will still creep up to the 6 range.

Post processing - levels, saturation, USM, border, resize for web.

Yeah, yeah, another boring shot in the mid 6's. Bummer. :-) Gorgeous colors and the composition works very well. Not sure where the votes below 5 came from...

Trading post...
Lovely as usual. Maybe this ship is your muse? LOL.

Critique Club Review:

Fits challenge well.

Lighting, color, contrast, saturation and hue, are all done extremely well. Even with the lights across the river, this could be from any time or any place. The border is unobtrusive and does not compete with or take asway from the picture. I am completely at a loss as to why this picture received any 1-2-3-4 scores. Even if a person were tired of sunsets and boat pictures, on technical merits alone I do not see a justification for a 1-2-3.

About the only thing I see that detracts in any way, is that the boat appears to be listing a bit. And with the list is gives the viewer the illusion that the camera was not level during the taking of the picture.

This is a job, very well done!

It seems like it's leaning to the left to much but probably because of those things sticking up in the air. The color is fantastic and I think you've got a very high scoring photo...I'll help...10.

The sky makes a touch above - The silloutte is great but add in the sky and you have something special.

Beautiful sky, it really sets off the masts. The composition breaks down a little bit in the lower right portion of the frame with the dark area not seeming quite right. At least in my opinion, but still very much an awesome photo.

Incredible sky, beautiful ship, nice reflection. Only thing that could improve this shot is removing the lights on the far shore. (I know, not in basic editing)

The silhouette effect is strong here, with plenty of interesting detail. The colour is excellent. I find myself wishing I could see the sky on both sides of the ship though. 7
