I finally tried this trick that I've seen other people do here at dpc. I only had a few minutes before work. Instead of using my infamous sun-room sliding glass door, I went for the computer monitor ... I had taken the background photo previously and thought it would be a great background -- especially since the topic was sillouhette since all I would need is backlight. I didn't want to use wine so i used a combo of cold coffee, water and a little grenadine for color. I used f1.8 because I was getting a bunch of moire (that's the printing term not sure if it applies here but it was a banding/pixelated deal going on). I took a few shots and nothing was perfect - the sky had blue in thte orginal pic and if I did this over I would have included that. It hink that's the thing that would have given it ribbon potential - oh-well.

post:
this was my alternate choice that I think might have annoyed fewer viewers since the sun doesn't have little happy lines going through it.

Good one... colors are good, the sun seems a little disturbing to me, but the hand and the glass are spot on... well done..

I think it's a bit too bright with the sun the way it is.

Hmm... I really like the idea, but this looks like a computer monitor or tv screen in the background. Maybe if the lines weren't there, and the colors were a little softer this would work better.

I like the idea, but I think there are 3 major elements that drop the score. There are several lines around the sun. The line of the wine does not follow the very straight horizon. The forefinger is distracting - being away from the others. 5.

the banding lines in the upper left corner, and the fuzziness of the water lead me to believe the background is a image on your monitor. I think if you had done this with a naturl background the effect would have been much better.

Cool concept, excellent color. I wonder if Neat Image could have helped take the lines out of the sun?
