Challenge: Free Study XII (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S2 IS
Location: Makeshift Indoor studio Hopatcong, NJ
Date: Aug 18, 2006
Aperture: 4.5
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/200
Galleries: Portraiture, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Aug 28, 2006

This was my first attempt at shooting someone who was modeling for me. It also gave me the chance to test my new indoor studio set up. The girl in the photo is not a model, but a friend who volunteered to model for me (even though she's never done it before). Studio used 2-500Watt Halogen work lamps coming from each side. A plant light and a desk lamp on each side as background lighting.

Post Processing:
Cleared the eyes
Added More color to Irises
Brightened teeth
Covered couple of unwanted moles/blemishes
Added contrast to entire photo
Used Channel Mixer to convert to Black and white
Added Text (deleted for challenge)

Just from the 3 comments I've read, you're getting the idea that nothing will please everyone. I gave this a 6. In the context of this challenge, that meant you'd chosen something that interested me, and done a pretty good job with it. And I still feel that way.

Unless this is the full frame, try a few different crops - looser, landscape, etc. And then post them in a thread in the forums and invite comment.

Keep it up!

I think you are a little too close to your model or too zoomed in. I don't feel like there is any breathing space for the viewer. Your light isn't too bad, but there seems to be a dark area straight on.

Focus is good and she is a nice looking model. Just keep foolin with your lights. Studio is a little tricky.

Hi. I was one of your 5's. I think your tones and focus are good in this shot. However, the combination of the close-up and the tight crop really puts her face in my face, and it's not comfortable. Plus she's looking right at me. She's a lovely girl, but the processing is very realistic. Maybe a little too realistic? To me, the key to improving the impact of this picture would be to back off, let the viewer have a little perspective on the model. Then you can consider whether to soften it up a touch, or give it an interesting twist of some sort. Just my 2c. Have fun experimenting :)

Nice smile, nice angle on her face.

camera angle a little low and lighting too flat. a 5 anyway

Technical: the composition is good, the lighting works too...
Creativity: it's not overly creative but still a good shot...
Score: 8

Good idea.

Nice sharp focus on the eyes - I can see her contact lenses :) One thing I would try and improve are the hotspots of flash reflections from parts of her skin.

Pretty girl, but the lighting looks a bit flat.

I like the framing and the B&W conversion, but could I suggest applying a little gaussian blur? This is just too sharp for a portrait. Most models will not appreciate having their pores clearly visible.

she's pretty...I would have liked this in colour as her eyes look amazing...the crop is a little too uncomfortably close...she has a peaceful face and you captured that well here
