An interesting and helpful set of comments from you all – thanks folks.
This pic was somewhat experimental and I was very curious to what people would think. It’s all texture and little contrast. I tried it with a more standard contrast range and while it made it jump out more it became just another pretty picture. I prefer it the way it is, your eye must work to find the forms of the tree and the more one looks the more there is to see. The odd crop and compressive border are experimental too – I wanted the viewers eye to go side to side.
I am quite pleased with people reactions. Some people seemed to like it and some found my experimenting unpleasant. So the things I did did provoke some sort of reaction and that is what I wanted.

========================

Due to a strong haze in the air the original image was rather dull and lacking contrast. I’m not sure what people will think of the rather harsh, grainy texture of this edit – it will be interesting to see.

Used channel mixer to convert to b&w.

delightful composition - tree and blanket of shadow - woven w/wool on the hoof. A challenge favorite.

I love love love this. It definitely would have made my front page. It looks like an 18th century illustration of a colonial farm.

Thank you Pineapple. You are spot-on with your deductions. This is theYorkshire Dales, England and just to the right of the picture is an ancient quarry.

Spectacular perspective! I love how we're looking down from above. Nice toning as well.

The view is amazing and beautiful. The overall picture is a bit fuzzy. I like the landscape you choose. Great work. 5 is my vote.

WOW, nothing screams "pastoral scene" like a bajillion sheep! Great pastoral scene! LOL! Love the tones and the composition.

Superb. The colour and mostly the sheep detail. Actually everything.

Interesting shot. Think in this particular instance, fan though I am of BW photos, this would have worked better in color. Very nice overall.

interesting to look at because of the processing. only critique is the crop on the left. that stone structure doesn't add to the scene.

Not a real good shot for B&W, the tonal range is just too flat. This one might have been better left in color. I do like the elevated POV, but crop it in tighter on the left side (About the break in the fence) to get rid of some distracting elements.

due to the colors, the center of my focus is not the tree as it blends into the background

I love the monochromatic color, though maybe a bit more contrast?

There doesn't seem to be enough definition between the tree and the rest of the photograph.

My first impression of this was very good. Upon reflection, I think the border hurts the photo and the green cast is less effective than if yu had fully desaturated it.

Nice picture but I personnally don't like the borders at the top and bottom (just my humble opinion)
