This is actually not MY great grandmother but my childrens but I think she IS great so the title is more like a play of words. Anyway, this is Valborg, my mothers mother.
This wasn´t taken for this challenge specifically but I thought it fitted the challenge perfectly so in it went, still have to make the 52 challenges this year even though I am "on a break" from DPC cause of a busy schedule. I have just stopped taking pictures specifically for challenges but if I take something during the week that fit´s and I like I´ll enter it of course :)
Anyway, was a school assignment to take a picture of someone who you know well that describes them. Well I had planned to take pictures of both my grandmothers the last weekend, am extremely proud of both of them, they are both widows and such strong charismatic women who have had a huge influence on my life. I plan on doing the same for my parents too, I think these images will be very important to me in the later stages in my life, hopefully it will be far in the future when that happens but these people will not be in my life forever.
Well my other grandmother Guðlaug couldn´t make it that day, was actually working (she drives a tour guide bus and runs a bus company, 80 years old!!!) but Valborg could make it. A very sweet character, raised 6 kids and by herself for a big part of it since my grandfather, who I am named after by the way, passed away when my mother, who was in the middle was only 14. Well I am told she never once complained and was always very nice to me and she is still very upbeat as you can see :P
If anybody reads arabic, that neclace she is wearing is spelling her name, Valborg, my mothers sister used to live in Saudi Arabia about 20 years ago with her husband and kids (all Icelandic) while he was teaching English there and they got that neclace for made for her there.
Anyway, post processing minimal, just basic raw conversion stuff, channel mixer for b/w conversion and curves for contrast. Lit with 3 lights, one from behind, one from the right side and one big softbox from the front/right side as main light. |

Everyone should be so Blessed! Nice to see a Sassy Senior among a World of "Sticks-in-the-Mud!" I'll just bet her philosophy is "Youth is wasted on the young!" And...I would agree!!!! :) |
