This was an edit of a shot from mist . Hope you don't mind I played with your shot.
Here are my steps in photo shop. From the bottom to top. I used contrast masking with the shadow layer at 21% and highlight layer at 100%. If you look in the tutorials you can see how to do this. Next is a curve layer where I made one point on the first dotted line on the left and pulled it down about four dots. Then made another point on the top horizontal line I pulled over to the right about a third of the way, sorry can't explain better but basically pulled all the colors darker. Next I used a gradient map layer using black and white for the color and the layer in luminosity mode. Next I used selective color with the following settings from top down. Reds -68, -8, +71, -7. Yellows +3, +9, +4, +100. Greens +68, +62, +71, +90. all other colors the same. Next I used another curve to darken the the whole image and masked out the bird to brighten it. Then another selective color layer using the neutrals with these setting top to bottom. -9, +3, +2 0. I then masked out the background and gave the bird some more red. Finally a channel mixer layer where I boosted each channel to 110%. I think it took longer for me to write all this then do the edit, lol.

Lots of effort there. I agree that this pulls out better colours in the bird's plumage in general, I think. The beak perhaps has a tad too much gold about it, but then the beak was one of the parts I wasn't too fond of in the original.

Lovely job I reckon. I don't have full photoshop so couldn't reproduce some of the steps, but it's interesting to see what can be done.
