Ok, this might be a little out of the box for some, but i hope this does well cause my two last submissions bombed. Also this shot took me for ever.

The idea came to me a few months ago, back in Montreal. I then started looking for an eye ball that I could use for the shot. I looked for months and couldn't find one. By the time this challenge appeared, I was in Warsaw and I spent a good deal of my time last week walking around warsaw trying to find eye ( i wanted to avoid the alarm clock set up or the shaving in the morning with a tooth brush and brushing with a razor at all cost). No success. So instead of finding one, I decided to make one, out of play-doh.

The set up took me for ever. It's in my old little communist kitchen in my small communist apartment, in an old communist block from the 50's, downtown Warsaw, Poland. There is one flash infront of me, facing away from me to bounce off my fridge. There's a flash on my right on a shelf and flash on a tripod, on my sink, high up in the right corner of the kitchen. It was the best i could do with the conditions I was in..as we all do. I wasn't able to get rid of some of those damn shadows. I hope i don't get nailed on that.

Post processing was long.

Cloning the "visial cortex" of the eye to make it thiner. Burning on the left side of my face. Healing a light spot on my shirt. Cloning out a distracting fridge cable next to the newspaper, levels, contrast, a light gradient in the bottom left corner aaaannnnddd, cloning a few things of my face like red spots etc.

I hope this does well. I like the result of my work here considering how much energy i put into it (now that i'm in Warsaw, labuda isn't around to help...so it's alllll me baby from now on). Hopefully it's not tooo out of the box to do poorly. And if i do poorly then...well that's life.

Yellow communist walls, in a communist apartment, in a communist building... Canada? I don't think so.

The lighting on the photo (and subjects) is a bit dark. Might suggest a tighter crop on the left side as the shadow on the wall made from the paper is distracting.

hm...tough to light indeed without proper studio gear. The first thing i notice is that it's strongly lit from the right side. this casts strong shadows from you, the cup, the bowl, and the paper. a second source of light (same strength as the first one, or slightly less) placed behind the camera and slightly to the left would fill this in nicely. Some shadow is good - it adds depth and contour to the photo - but shots like this need more even lighting i think. Lower light also tends to over saturate reds, so adding some light would be a good thing (and maybe a shift in your white balance...your hands and face look a little on the red side).

You either see the funny side or you don't. I didn't.

very funny! a good composition, and a great idea. i just wish the lighting were a bit better - the man needs a bit more light onhis face, and the background wall corner a bit less.

HAhaha this idea is amusing
Now on other aspects it feels like something can be done with the light.
This doesnt feel very morning like in the sense that morning light is generally very pale, or, if youre in canada as i know you are now, mornings these days are really dark. Then again morning does last till noon, however for some reason i feel like this isnt in the morning jsut because of how grey it is, lack of contrast between what is illuminated and what isnt, it looks like its shot in the afternoon.
Good luck with it though!

I like the idea, but the execution lets this down. The lighting is the main culprit, its a little drab, no zing, like looking through a grey filter.

5+1: The image itself is a 5 but I'll add one for humor :)
