I think that shallow DOF really works for flower photography, where the background should be textured without detail to show off the colours and detail in the flower first and foremost.

I took this in a field near my office.

Modifications from original:

1. Level adjustment using layer
2. cropping to balance composition.

The flower seems to be ever so slightly out of focus. May be better if it was not right in the center also.
