I'm actually surprised that this photo placed and scored as well as it did. I know the colors are muted and there's not much contrast, but this is how the scene actually looked. The washout in the sky is actually the haze of pollution from Toronto, and the dark smudge in the top left corner is dust inside my camera. To take this shot, I climbed to the top of a construction site hill of dirt. And how coincidental - just yesterday on the VR 6:00 news, they had a story about the danger of urban sprawl to our environment. |

Good repetition, I like the detail. |

A sad state of affairs, no doubt. This really meets the challenge without a doubt but the shot itself leaves me wanting. The coloring is so muted and the light in the shot is so dull overall. |

Funny (and very sad at the same time). |

Good job visualizing the claustraphobia(sp) associated with new developments. Makes one wonder how people can live there. |

Very artistic shot. Like the lamp posts in the background that balance the image off. You could fix the contrast a little bit - it's kind of monotone, so maybe b&w would work well the emphasize the structure of the image instead of the greyish colour. |

Nicely seen- IMO cropping the top skyline just leaving the roofs would hav given a wow factor. |

Nope. This does not meet the challenge. [1]
Just kidding. What colour ribbon do you like? This is superb. Great vantage point, good lighting and excellent feeling of urbania/suburbia. A little lacking contrast in shaded areas and image is slightly too muted - even for the subject! Smudgy blob is a bit annoying. [8] |

This photo would have had more impact if you had cropped out the sky and only concentrated on the house tops. The pale sky gives it a washed-out effect. Great idea! I hope you're not afraid of heights. |

"They're growing houses in the fields between the farms" quote from a song by John Gorka. Your photo captures the sense of houses jammed together. I'd guess you used a fairly long focal length telephoto to get that tight-packed effect. |

They DO look like they're popping up out of the ground. I'd like to see it with the top cropped off so that only the roofs are visible but perhaps it works best this way. |

You should also try this with the sky cropped out, if you already haven't. |

I don't get the title unless you are refering to farmers selling of their land to developers. This looks like a very dreary place to live. Where is the color. Where is the green. I would go nuts here. From a photo sense. The focus seems a little soft for this style of shot and I would love to see a deep DOF. Or with the softer focus here there needs to be a place for your eye to come to rest and I don't see a subject.

Very well composed. I love your title too. Single family "detached" house farms. |
