Living with a steam railway at the bottom of my garden meant that this was a challenge I just had to have a go at! And, as luck would have it this weekend heralded a Steam Extravaganza meaning that I would have a choice of classic steam locomotives to choose from. Sadly, however, the weather far from obliged with heavy rain most of the time. This was just one shot I managed to get during the short sunny spell between the showers.

Shot in RAW and converted using Olympus Master. Slight straightening and crop of original, levels, curves and contrast adjustment. Smart sharpen applied to detail on front of engine only. Resized and saved as jpeg.

Good choice of location to make the composition, and good timing to catch it there. Wish there had been a little more light on the engine/foreground; I understand rescheduling trains is not always an option : )

I got this one right up there amongst the top finishers. Great image. The sky at the top would be cool if it were a bit more dynamic. I'm sure you already know this, but if you have Adobe you can go to Adjustments>Selective Color>Blues and/or Cyan. I wonder what it would look like if that color was burned in there a little more?

Nicely composed - needs just a touch more crispness on the front of the engine in my opinion.

Nice. Simple, clean, nice landscape. Some color. The engine looks like it could be a little sharper focus wise, but overall pretty good. Best of luck to you in the challenge.

You caught this one at just the right time. The curve of the track, the puff of steam, the lighting all work together to create a great work of art.

Love the steam. Front of the train looks a little soft though.

A good traditional-style shot of a loco. I know that you were probably limited in where you could stand to get the shot, etc. but to make the shot better (in an ideal world), I think that an angle that showed shape of the steam-cloud would have been better. Also the shadows across the track and carriages are distracting slightly.

nice location...lacks focus and sharpness, it seems the camera has selected the wrong spot
