 Half the petals were removed and the rose was jammed upright, a piece of black card was placed behind to provide the background. Taken with a Sigma 105mm macro lens and Canon Speedlight 550EX

Lighting too spot focused on petals - the greenery seems to fall out of the light into the darkness. Perhaps that's a deliberate choice but it doesn't add anything to me. Nor does the central (somewhat stagnant ) composition. I think I can see the idea you were striving for (a simple elegance with limited but vibrant colours) but the composition and lighting don't quite pull that off for me.

The composition here is a bit too centered for my taste. I believe this centered composition would work better with a tighter crop on the left and right.

Bold lighting really hightlights the flower very well. The crisp shadows help to bring out each fold of the petail. The black background frames the subject very well.

A white rose who has been exposed for the world to see her beginnings, the seeds inside. Wonderful idea. The black background is wonderful, the only drawback is the darkened petal on the right, starting with an 8, I'll be back to look again.
