I don't like how his body blends into the background. It's disturbing, like a floating head...

newfie!? I recently had to place my 1 year and 4 month old male newfoundland with a newfie rescue agency, as I cannot take him with me on my next move. Your photo brings about many memories, and I sat for several minutes just looking over this photo. Thanks!

As to the photo itself, I wish it had a little more background contrast, so that the viewer could distinguish between the background and the dog's body. I know how hard it is to take a photo of a dog with a black face, or all black - its a challenge to get an accurate exposure. I think you've done good and shown a lot of detail regardless. nice job.

Something is strange to me about the dogs tongue - like it almost doesn't belong there. The focus on his head is really, really good.

I like your creativeness in choosing black and white for this photo. It shows the two tones of the dogs fur very well. However, I find the background too light and distracting from the subject. I would try to use a different location that has a darker background or place a filter (a digital one would work here) that darkens the background.

I like the contrast, lighting and pose. However, I am not sure what the Landscape format gives you but dead space...

Good exposure on the dark parts, but the burnt out highlights of the white part of dog's coat do rather give the appearance of a disembodied head floating in space. A hard one to balance well.
