Lighting details:

My boy was standing off to the left of the camera holding a Canon 420EX flash (in slave mode) mounted on a monopod with an umbrella bracket and a white translucent shoot thru umbrella in front of it. He was pointing the umbrella at the couple.

Meanwhile, I have my Canon 580EX (set to master) on camera, but swiveled to the left to point at the 420EX so that the 420EX will be sure to see it go off.

Finally, to set my exposure, I pointed the camera at the sky (not at the sun) and metered the sky using Av mode since I knew what aperture I wanted. The camera gave me a reading for the shutter speed, so I switched to manual and put my desired aperture and the camera calculated shutter speed into the settings.

At this point, it's all up to E-TTL to get the exposure on the couple correct. The master tells the slave to do a pre-flash. The camera measures the light from the pre-flash and then the master tells the slave to fire appropriately. It all works like magic. :-)

great shot and nice use of the speedlites....
i was wondering.... how did you manage to use E-TTL trough the umbrella.
the sensor on the flash can't get trough it or what?
i've been using similar setup but this has been a problem...
now i hope you have some solution? :)
