Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Long Exposure II (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Pentax K100D
Lens: Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF
Location: My studio in Huntington Beach, California
Date: Nov 4, 2006
Aperture: F11
ISO: 200
Shutter: 30 secs
Galleries: Abstract, Portraiture
Date Uploaded: Nov 5, 2006

Shot in RAW format with a 30 sec exposure and a 12 sec timer delay. The delay was so I would have time to turn on my small MagLite so I could see where I was going, run behind the model, position the MagLite at starting point above the hat, and finally cover the light with my hand.

When the shutter opened, I removed my hand from the front of the light and began tracing her silhouette. I tried shorter exposures, but didn't have enough time to trace her outline, including the openings created by her hands on her hips.

We finally got one that looked good on the 12th take. We both wore black to minimize exposure of anything distracting.

Post-processing steps:

In RAW:
-------
o Adjusted color temperature
o Convert RAW to 16-bit TIFF

- Green Levels: 180/1.00/255

o Cloned to remove a couple of "minor imperfections" (as per rules)
o Duplicate layer and dodged side of face area to bring out more detail

o Save for web (size priority)

This definitely a cool technique. I'm left wondering, though, how I could use it to create a deeper reaction than "that's cool!"

This is very cool, though for the purposes of the Challenge perhaps you should have given more details in the face. That may have given you a higher score as voters wouldn't have assumed it was just a neon light. ;>þ

Great artistic vision, and well executed. I don't know how well it will fair among the other voters, but you certainly have my vote. Well done. GL.
