My very first portrait “gig”.

This was taken outdoors. It was an hour before sunset and the subject is being shielded from direct light. He is about 6 feet from a pebble-crusted wall (which is getting stronger light). I placed a big flashlight wrapped in wax paper on the shadow side of his face (the light was hanging from a tripod). I set my on-camera 430EX to high-speed sync dialed down 1 1/3. I used the 50mm at 1.8 and shot very close (super shallow DOF ).

Nice work! he is aloof but I suppose that is the point of the portrait. The BG is fantastic and complementary to your subject. Well done.

I agree with mk pretty much, but had this guy been off centered and pulled back just a tad, it would have had more impact. The light is wonderful, the focus perfect and the colors really pop though.

For me, this image just lacks connection. It has a nice background. His left shoulder area looks a bit soft. I think maybe your position is a bit too close and low. It's nicely exposed. There's just nothing to pull me in...I don't know him, there's nothing especially striking about him (except maybe the shirt ;) ) and it lacks anything that makes me want to consider it longer which is something you really need when you're competing against 500 entries. Sweet bokeh, though.

Nicely done. I like that he's wearing glasses and has a print shirt. It works since the background is just slightly textured. Good DOF. Bumping up.
