The light and angle give this a very powerful impact.

Love the tones/colors in this photo, really sets a mood. Gave it a 10 myself...nice shot.

I kept the shutter open by using Canon's RS-80N3, it's a remote shutter release that you can lock indefinitely. You can see what I'm talking about HERE.

I've found that the 10-D doesn't suffer from the long exposure grain that other digital cameras do.

I would like to know how you left the shutter open for 175 seconds as well. Whats the name of that fuction on the camera? I'd like to know which other cameras have that capability as well. Thanks

I don't know much about the cannon EOS-10D but 1)how do you leave the shutter open for 175 seconds and 2)how do you prevent the graniness characteristic of long exposures?

This is an awesome photo. Would have voted 10 if a member!

Well, I should probably explain this image a bit more huh?

Canon 10-D
ISO 100
175 second exposure
16mm Zenitar fisheye lens (f/5.6)

I was at a local park at 1:19 in the morning. I positioned the camera so the moon was behind the outhouse (yes an outhouse). The specs in the sky are stars with their short star trails. The light in the sky is produced by clouds passing in front of the moon.

The light on AND inside the building was produced by myself waving a flashlight around. The moon, flashlight and stars were the only light sources.

Thanks for all your comments and votes!

Looks like an effective time-exposure ... are those streaked clouds or aurora effects?

Nice effect - what is producing the light behind the building? The quality of the light makes the building look unreal - like it's been CGI rendered (I'm not suggesting it has been :-) The cool steely blue of the sky contrasts well with the warm lighting in the building.

The warm glowing light in the aisins contrast so nicely with the Northern Lights outside. Very striking and dynamic! 10

I love this picture. I wish I could say better why, but I don't know much. I just love the feeling that this picture gives me. It is a surrealistic looking imagine. I hope everybody will see what is obvious. It is a top 3 I will say now because I haven't seen all the images yet. But even after I would have seen them all, the beauty of this one, will still remain unchanged. :) Good luck!

This certainly has a interesting visual/mood. I'm not sure what the building is, but it looks like there is a fire inside and the streaks are sparks and smoke. The orange inside the building are warm and appealing and sets the tone of the shot. The 'halo-like' effect of the smoke makes it almost supernatural. I think the composition could have probably been improved slightly, although not sure how and this may have been the best angle, I dont really know. I'm not sure if you did the angle to get the sun/moon in just that spot or to try and hide it. Either way it has a good feel to it, certainly captured a mood.

Good use of light, I like the rays coming over the building. The difference in colors with the warm orange against the cooler grey/blue adds interest, as does the perspective. There does however seem to be some glare, flares or something.. little white bits in the sky, they don't look like stars (though they may be) but it is rather distracting and detracts from the image. 5 Revising my vote after due to further info from photographer, they are stars and knowing how they came about made a difference. Upgrading to a 6 because I now understand why they look as they do but still find them distracting .

I find this strangely appealing, although I was dismissive of it on first viewing. It has quite a sci-fi feel and I like the contrast of the golden interior light to the white star light. Only negative for me is the flare of white light near the apex of the roof. Is that the moon or something else?

Good one, the effect of the rain is very image enhancing. Or did you use a super long shutter speed and those are stars? You have quite a few different light sources I see - 9.

The light streaming and the star trails make this a bold shot. The warmth of the light in the building says safe and protected.

I like the idea and the light is real interesting but it almost need something else. I keep expecting a hand to rise out from behind the image. I gave a 5.

The light coming over the building is great, I feel like i would somehow like more of the light and less of the building.

I dont know what this is, but great use of light both inside and outside of the structure. Good choice to offset the structure.

Wonderful exposure. Be sure to post details about this shot after the challenge. Would love to know what the structure is (fancy outhouse?), exposure time, settings, etc. Very moody, in my opinion.

A nice exposure, just look at those star trails.

The brick blocks of the building have a too heavy a presence - I would have cropped the low area to remove them.
