In response to this thread:
Hi Leroy! I see you've placed this shot in the Fashion category, so I'll assume that's the tack you were trying to take. You've already gotten a lot of comments about "snapshot," armpit showing, and uncomfortable pose which I won't echo here although I'd tend to agree. It seemed like you may have believed that your low score was related shallow voters responding to model attractiveness -- I just don't think that was the case.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm no fashion photographer, but as a viewer this shot does not scream "Fashion" to me, not does it evoke "sexy" or "sultry." This really has less to do with the model and more to do with the choice of pose. The model clearly looks uncomfortable and awkward, and frankly, I just don't see the pose itself working with any model even if the lighting were improved.
With that said, there's nothing specifically unattractive about her, and I'm sure if you worked with her again when she was feeling more comfortable and natural you could get a great shot.
At the end of the day, you have to let your dogs run and your cats purr...meaning the models should be doing what comes naturally to them.
Lastly, with regard to the fashion aspect, this just seems to miss the mark. The hair isn't really "done" - the break in the flow to show the ear isn't right, the coiffure is not smooth and is a bit unkempt for a fashion shoot, she's in what appears to be an inexpensive tank top, and the necklace isn't right. There just isn't much about the outfit that is glamorous, which is another reason why the pose doesn't work.
I truly don't believe that the score was reflective of what voters thought about the model -- given the technical choices regarding lighting the composition revealing the armpit, the juxtaposition between the pose and the outfit I think the score was a little low for a regular challenge and about right for a Free Study.

Followed the thread with interest.
My comment: To me this model suffers from a severe case of "please the photographer." She's trying to create a pose that you want her to do. Let this nice lady range free to try what she is comfortable with, and see what happens then. |

If I had voted, I probably would have given it a four or a five. The focus is good and the lighting is good (though the shadow from her right hand makes it look less set up/planned/intentional and more snapshotish, to me). However, the pose is completely uncomfortable (unnatural, maybe?) to me. It looks like she is checking her pulse with one hand and offering a smell of her deodorant with the other arm. I don't mind that she isn't looking at the camera, but because she is looking out of the frame, it makes me wonder about the context of the shot, and that makes the crop feel a little tight.
As far as her size, that doesn't matter squat to me. If she were a tiny blond perfect model, I would have voted it the same. |

I didn't vote on it but would have been a 5 from me which is my usually low score. not because of weight or general anesthetics, but because for me the light seemed a little harsh, kind of ameteur pornish when combined with the pose and then the VERY first thing I thought when I saw it was "OMG!how old is she?" She looks 14. that made me almost angry to see her in a situation like that. so Those may have been reasons for your scores. maybe not. but just my opinion..I don't mean any of it badly. |

Oh you can't be serious....this is such a travesty. This image is clear, good lighting and composition. This is crazy. |

Not many people manage to get the Brown Ribbon without getting a single "1". That is an award in itself.
Correction edit: not a Brown ribbon even. Just was the last page that I scrolled down to. Oh well, better luck next time.

The pose is not very flattering. It does not look natural or comfortable. I would love to see her smile more. |

Harsh lighting and shadows, really don't do much for this girl. The pose too is a little unflattering |

Flash is very heavy here - those nasty shadows from the hand and the nose could effectively be softened and produce a smoother image overall. It seems an odd pose to have chosen - either as a pose or as a chosen moment by you. |
