 crop. copied background, curves, overlay mode, masked the magazine, deleted all the rest except magazine. invert selection: some play with channel mixer + decreased saturation for the rest of the picture.

This is really nice. Love the composition, love the selective desat. I have no idea what you're referencing, but hey, it doesn't stop me enjoying your wonderful imagery. Great work!
