Location: Living room
Date: Dec 3, 2006
Aperture: F11
ISO: 200

I setup a black backdrop (using some old tapestry material) dimmed the lamp light with aluminum foil so it wouldn't light up the backdrop and stoked the fireplace. My daughter is reading all the time anyway, so it wasn't hard for her to pose for this! I used a flashlight covered with thin white muslin-like material to "paint" some light on her face and the bricks.

I shot with F11 because my 18-55 "kit" lense is pretty good there and I wanted everything to be mostly sharp, of course I had it on a good solid tripod and asked my daughter to be very very very still....I tried some high ISO (1600) black and white grainy shots too, but I liked the soft warmth of iso 200 with color better.

Reminds me of my daughter who simply loves reading, firesides, cats and comfort. Your photo is personal but with wide appeal, I believe. Glad you entered it.

Thank you to all who took the time to comment. For those who thought the picture was snapshotish and boring, I would also like to say thanks. Don't ever be afraid to be critical because that helps someone trying to learn very much.

Funny about the grandma comment kawana, I didn't even think about it until you said that. The sweater that my daughter has on does look "old fashion" huh?

Gordon your comment was especially helpful and probably the reason for the lack of WOW. I think you are right on about the background.

Nudibranch, thank you also for the specific recommendation.

Although this has a snapshot type feel, it works overall as a simple and lovely photo. 5.

I'm gonna vote this photo up because I like the simplicity and I think other people will probably pound on it for lacking wow, or something equally lame. So yeah, nice job. Bumping up.

Nice homey feel. I would like to see what this looked like in sepia or black/white.

Nice simple image but overall not an attention grabber.

A more colourful knee rug would have made this picture much more interesting.

The really black background makes this feel like it is shot in a studio or somewhere else removed from a 'homely' location. Letting some more ambient light in the background might help to create more of a warm 'pool of light' feel.
