Jesse was performing at a small coffee shop in Salem. The songs were quiet, but his voice very powerful. The setting sun shining on him through the window really enhanced the mood.

I shot this RAW and only did some NN and Levels, Curves, Unsharp Mask, then downsized for the comp.

I may have some outtakes for people to provide feedback also...

EDIT: THANKS all for the comments. They are helpful, although I personally disagree with the feeling that the negative space distracts from the image. The singer was so "into" his music it was like he was in a trance and really separated himself from his surroundings. I think that by cropping wider, I would have lost that "distance" from the venue and listeners. But perhaps I could have conveyed that differently.

The lighting was purely natural light from an outside window. No interior lights or flash were used.

Thanks again! Some outtakes:

Out of the 5 pics, this one is certainly the best. I love how you captured the sunlight on his face. You caught him in the "moment" and the lighting enhances that feeling. There is something about all the darkness on the left that doesn't sit right with me. Something needs to intercept it a little. Have you tried just lighting up his arm and guitar and leave the rest black? I mean lighting up the parts we don't see there on the left. I don't know if dodging(?) might do that? Anyway - cool capture!

Needs a lot of work. Too much dead space. light not quite in the right places. It's a nice capture, though. You are on the right track with this. I'm not even sure if I could accomplish this myself.

Nice lighting, although I can still vaguely make out some background elements which are mildly distracting.

I like this because you captured the essence of acoustic guitar in a warm image. It is also interesting to look at which is very hard to do with a live shot like this.

I wonder if Jesse would use this as a promotional poster? It looks like that's what the shot would have been for...or maybe album art?

A little too much negative space on the left. It could have been cropped at the elbow without hurting anything. It need a little more light on the guitar too.
