 This is a new grave in the old, old cemetery in Manassa. I went there to take a photo for the Death Challenge and saw it and went back today to take this picture. I was really surprised to see a fresh grave in this cemetery - most of the graves are over 100 years old. When someone is buried in the winter here the grave is just heaped up with dirt till the next spring when perhaps they'll level it off.

This probably won't do very well because it has American Flags in it and artificial flowers - I like it though. It kind of look like a soldiers grave - perhaps someone who was killed in Afghanistan or somewhere. However, the name on the little marker is a woman's name. She was 75 years old.

Editing:Crop; Adjustment layers for levels, curves, contrast and selective color; Flatten; Noise removal; Resize; Smart sharpen; add border; save for web.

sad, but necessary, dirt hold up some dirt in a shovel to emphasis the subject-dirt.

Very good entry. I like the concept, and I like the execution. The light is beautiful (is it evening light?). It shines on the flowers/flags, and a bit on the grasses behind them, like a beautiful backdrop, but the grave and dirt aroud it are in shadow for the most part. Great match for the challenge. ~9

There is nice contrast in the upper right, but the lower left seems quite a bit flatter. 5

While this is potentially a very powerful image, I'm afriad the message is somewhat lost to composition choice and post-processing. This image from a slightly lower perspective and in black and white would probably bring more "punch".
