This is a decorative fence I placed behind a stone cherub for this shot. The fence challenge is a hard subject to make interesting so I was looking for something worthy of printing.
This cherub was sitting on the ground in the sunlight and the surrounding area was shaded from the trees. I under-exposed the shot to try to keep the strong light from blowing out. I probably should have spot metered the exposure but I left it on multi-meter knowing the camera is better than I am. It took a little more work in processing the dark areas of the photo, but I am happy with the final result.
It is a single exposure. I layered a sepia tone of the image into the color version to mute the color back and I simply brought more of the original green and rust color selectively back in some areas of the fence and the cherub leaving most of the background with the sepia tone.
The picture was pretty simple shooting but I needed an appropriate title.
I think because the cherub is the main subject of my shot and the fence is a subtle accent to the subject, my score may tank into the depths of DPC brown ribbon hell. But, I like it well enough to take the chance with the voters and I'm not going to worry much about the score.
I thought about giving it a title with some cleverly worded gibberish so the big predominant angel figure wouldn’t be seen at all and the fence would jump out and scream; I’M HERE, I MEET THE CHALLENGE.
Maybe something like; Do he Angel or are he fence. (Inspired by similar titles, which have also hit the depths of DPC brown ribbon hell).
OK, so I need to find a real title
I searched “angels” to see if I could get some ideas for a great title and…. like everything in my life… one thing leads to another and I find myself going off into these weird areas of the internet. I get so side-tracked into all kinds of interesting things to read and pretty soon I can’t even remember what I was looking for or why I was reading about the Ark of the Covenant and how the cherubim were placed on each side of it.
Alright, I know you are all thinking to yourself; man, that Gringo dude is a whack.
I also learned that because most English speakers are unfamiliar with Hebrew plural formation, the word cherubims is sometimes incorrectly used as a plural. In English usage, cherubs is also an acceptable plural form, especially for "baby angels".
So there you go… now you have that working for you.
Descriptions of cherubim in the Bibles vary through the many translations from the Hebrew Bible, but in general all describe cherubim as a winged creature combining human and animal features. In the book of Genesis cherubim are described as guarding the way to the “Tree of Life” East of the Garden of Eden armed with flaming swords. (Genesis 3:24): "So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."
Hence my title – East of Eden
It’s not particularly clever or unique, but the thought process is there. I think selecting the perfect title for your image is a fundamental part of the overall expression. I hope some of you like the picture, but I hope all of you like the title.

I like both the title and the shot. You really do get the feeling that she's guarding the gate |

Very nice, maybe I would desaturated a little more and give more light to those shadows |

A good cmposition but i feel that the sculpture takes away all the attention and the challenge theme is clearly overshadowed here |
