I feel like I've entered a deeply psychological period of my photography. I'm obsessed with not only capturing emotion, but to make my photography delve deep into any viewer's psyche. This is actually a self-portrait, but I look nothing like this. I literally had to "make myself ugly" (I'm not a self-righteous beauty queen...) to create the mood of this portrait. My husband doesn't like to look at this photograph because it was so scary to him. The setup was simple: I set my camera on self-timer with the settings below and used uplighting (single floodlight from below) to create the "horror" look. The camera was set up in the kitchen and I was looking through a divider between the living room and kitchen. I also draped the living room in a dark cloth to get rid of any ambient light and turned off all lights in the house...I wanted a totally pitch black background to achieve an effect indicative of the subject coming from the depths of the darkness. The only post processing that I did was pushing the contrast a little to enhance the horror look.

No no no, please keep thinking of art. Do it for me. Screw the scores. Make me happy! You evoke Man Ray with this shot. I hate the thought of another poetic soul diminished by the DPC grinder.

Congratulations on entering your first challenge :) The challenge description is as follows:

"The fences we are referring to are actual, physical fences; some are decorative, some are protective, some mark boundaries, some are for erosion control. Think about fences, and give us YOUR perspective :-)"

Here at DPC, out-of-the-box interpretations of the topic and description aren't usually great ideas for challenge photos. There are occasions where they do well, but they must have some extremely strong element to pull them above the median score. When a photo requires any significant thought to 'grasp' in a challenge, it is an absolute requirement that the image provide a high level of 'eye candy' to get the viewer to consider your interpretation a little deeper. The high number of photos in any given challenge here keep people from spending more than a couple seconds looking at a photo. With some eye candy in the image, you may get a little more thought about your idea.

Think of a challenge as a 'game' rather than an art competition. It's a game/contest where your own result is handed to you by your competition.

Good luck :)
