This is the photo that stood out in my memory when I spoke with you yesterday. I'm so glad you took the time to capture her so beautifully Alex. I love what E301 had to say about it.. its a real photo that doesnt try to hide anything about who she was...but its not without love.. there is emotion and I hope you frame this one.
Again.. sorry for your loss hun.
xx

This is strong, honest, sensitive photography; I don't think you've done anything to sentimentalise your subject, nor her predicament; and yet I don't think this is an image without sympathy - as one would think of Diane Arbus' work, for instance. The concentration of attention on her lower legs and feet is powerful, and effective: giving one that sense of being forced to avoid her face, to avoid meeting her gaze, just as would be one's immediate reaction if one met her in the street, say. The towel between her knees speaks of the misunderstood problems of palsy, without making a big deal of it. Some other comments also make clear another impact of this disease - the removal of, aberration of sexuality, which is perhaps even colder an impact. |

I'm terribly sorry that because this isn't just a "pretty face" or "sunny day" that it didn't fair nearly as well as it deserved. I thought it was beautiful and looked inside the person, beyond her bleak exterior. |

I didn't get to voting for your photo in this challenge. Only managed about 70%. A visual simile came into my mind when seeing Auntie Fouzia, namely Stephen Hawking. I used to work on Stephen's books via his agent in NYC and looked at his photo many a time. I suppose there is another simile too, an agile mind, sometimes we are not aware quite how agile, is inside a gnarled body. I think your photo is much better than many I have seen of Hawking. |

Bold, beautiful photo. Breathtaking. Not emotional, something deeper than that, and colder. |

This should at least have reached the top ten. Excellent portrait, but probably too harsh a subject for the voters. |

voted 9... bos. A remarkable portrait of Fouzia, a beautiful, peaceful expression. I wish him well - but also a brutal and startling confrontation to the reality and effect of disease.

Such an interesting composition, with the light and focus mostly on the subject's legs. It looks like it came out of a magazine or newspaper story. Black and white was a good choice here, I think. |

The perspective and centered composition works well, in that it highlights Fouzia's contorted body. |

this is such a powerful photograph .. the subject of course, but the combination of the subject and the other elements as well ... the black & white, the dramatic sky and the stark branches and the perspective that leads your eye even more so to the subject ...
the more i look at this photograph the more i see it is a work of art ...
looking at this lady i'm struck by the differences in ppl's lives and what hardships some ppl endure ... my prayers are with her ... =10 |
