Do you really roll 20's or is it a +1, 20-Sided Die with Tenser's Mystyical Highroller cast on it?
Some thoughts on this one.
Definitely meets the challenge: subject is centered.
Subject is shot head on, which many people consider boring and which causes some pretty good glare highlights if shot very close to the subject. Straight on flash, close up, close background -> lends to a very dark (lower die) shadow that mimics the die's shape and leaves a non-artsy fartsy shadow.
TO KEEP your original idea: Take this poster board and place it 8-20 inches below a piece of glass. Set the die on the piece of glass and shine a finger-sized mag light on die either from directly atop or from the level of the glass. (spot light or long shadow). Then pick an alternate angle from which to shoot (zoom but from further away) and use an F-stop between 5 and 7 to get the die fully in focus, but the poster to be blurred beyond blur. In fact, try getting a very very bright light to shine through the back of the poster to create odd lighting there too or shoot a mid-long exposure and move the posterboard background in a swirling to create a 'magical aura' behind the die (add smoke, use some painting with light...)
This is the type of subject that is really hard to go over well, because a die is so...bland. An engagement ring of course would go over much better or a detailed Cameo...why...no idea, just the way of DPC.
oh crap...I just rolled a 1, have to go fix my laptop.

I don't get how people vote sometimes. I thought you'd get a much higher score with this photo. Frankly, I am baffled. I loved it. |

I wonder if what might score better with the DPC crowd would be a cleaner background with some kind of arty shadow being cast by the die. Or something, what do I know? |
