 contrast, dodge, burn, warmed it up due to crappy light, decided that a hue/sat layer taking the saturation down by individual channel would work to de-emphasize the horse's brilliant coat color. Then erased on the mask a little to bring back the pink of the gums.

I had other entries for this challenge, but lapsed into humor mode.
