This is from the 2007 Mummers Parade in Philadelphia. I shot the parade last year, but this year I REALLY got into it. I got some amazing images from 6 hours of shooting(500+ shots).

The Mummers are hard to explain if you've never seen them or heard of them. It's a tradition in Philadelphia that was brought here from European roots but it's taken on a unique life of it's own. The New Year's Brigades or New Year's Associations are groups who compete on New Year's Day for a trophy in one of 4 divisions. The brigades spent the entire year designing, orchestrating, and practicing their routines for the BIG day.

Who and what are Mummers?

Normally it's held on New Year's Day, but since the costumes and set pieces are fragile, rain dates do occur. This year's parade actually happened on 1/6.

Editing: Tried something new. Shot in RAW and ran it all through Picasa2 for some painless fast editing. They've really done some good work on it since I last used it. Crop, Shadow/highlight/fill-light, Sharpen, B&W filter.

The original of this had a wicked lens flare over the kid's eye which disappeared using Picasa's Filtered B&W selecting a Blue filter. Sweet!

i think this is great! i love all of his decorations! i think the greatest thing about this is his expression though... the element he is in (parade?) calls for happiness and glee but his expression tells us he is a bit bored and unexcited. i think u caught a cool moment in life here!

Nice job countering the bright backlighting with fill-in flash. Little bit of flare creeping in over the top of the hat. Too bad you couldn't have captured this without the gal on the right. Good luck in the challenge.
