Challenge: Black and White Portrait II (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II
Location: Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle, WA
Date: Jan 8, 2007
Aperture: f5.6
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/40
Galleries: Animals, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jan 8, 2007

crop, resize, desaturate, shadow/highlight, B/W gradient map, flatten, USM

The gorilla was behind glass and there was man made lighting under the overhang where it was. None of the cameras lighting settings seemed adequate( used fluorescent mode). So converted to B/W and happier with tones. It was looking around its enclosure and at different people behind the glass until it happened to look almost directly at me and I took the shot.

This could use a little more contrast to bring out those great textures. Nice way of thinking outside the box on the challenge! 7

Would like more light on the eyes to better see the expression. Maybe even just dodge the highlights a little more?

if this creature shows emotion on its face like we do then its very sad ... to capture emotion or evoke emotion is one of the aims in photography ... =9

This is just great, the expression on his face, the texture of his skin.

I hope you're doing well with this, I really like it. I think if you had the gorilla's head filling the frame it would have made the whole effect much more dramatic (only a thought). Good luck.

Perhaps a bit more Black in this B&W would enhance the great expression and fine details.

I thnk whats interesting and even startling about this type of pic is the humanness that you can read in the facial expressions. It is easy to imagine a human with almost the same expression.. great shot.
