We had another bizarre snow storm here in the Seattle area. I decided to go over to my wife's barn and take a few photos.

Photo pretty much straight out of the camera. Could use a bit in the curves department. I darkened the top of the picture a bit to bring out the contrast with the clouds. All changes done in Catpure NX. No crop. 35mm Prime. Used the B&W mode on camera. Figured I would start moving back to B&W since I have been neglected it a bit. Whites are not truly white in this photo. I tried it with pure whites and even higher contrast, but kept coming back to this one. Sometimes you can have too much contrast.

Fairly straight forward photo. Since it is a free study I'll guess around 5.3. I'm pleased with the composition. Lacks oommph though.

Jayson,

I am a fan of simplicity that is technically well done, and think you succeeded quite nicely with this. I was one of your higher scores (7). I know in your comments you mentioned lack of pure white, but I see some whites in the rooftop and small area of the sky on my monitor. In fact, this seems like a very well metered shot to me, and we all know how trick snow is!

The one thing that seems problematic is the horizon - I think it may be a tad skewed to the left.

Dang it, Skewsme beat me to it. I was even gonna say it looked like something from a notecard. :)

Jason, very nice snow scene. I'll bet this was a nice shot in color even with the cloudy skies.

Nice entry, Jayson! I didn't get back to comment on this in time, but it got an 8 from me. I kinda favor the grey snow because it makes this look like it's on an xmas card or in a picture book. I guess if you really really wanted to, you might have done some real soft dodging on the snow to bring out the contrasts within. Or possibly channel mixer might have teased something out. But really, the grey gives it a nice mood. I like the composition too! But you really ought not to keep your wife in a barn ;-)

I like the fence, and the trees are real nice, the sky needs something.

Beautiful capture of a sweet snow fall. The use of black and white on a snowy day really is incredible. Really great job on composition.

This is such a beautiful winter scene. I love this so much! I think the whites could be made a little whiter with a tiny selective color adjustment to make it pop & contrast even more -- but I truly love it just like it is too!
