Challenge: Minimalism II (Minimal Editing I*)
Camera: Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D
Lens: Konica Minolta AF 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6(D) DT
Location: Northern California
Date: Jan 25, 2007
Date Uploaded: Jan 25, 2007

Didn't know about this challenge and I was on vacation this week. Luckily I shot in RAW+JPEG mode for reasons having nothing to do with the challenge. Of course, if I had known, I would have payed more attention to in camera settings and straightened horizons. (although in this case, the horizon line of the coast wasn't straight in real life either). Wasn't sure if I should go color or black and white with this but decided that the straight out of camera look of the b+w bothered me a lot less than the straight out of camera color. I don't like these editing restrictions at all.

Post challenge: This did MUCH better than I thought it would! Would have been awesome to get sixth place though. :)

This is Moonstone Beach near Trinidad, CA, right? Grew up in the area and went here often.

this is a great shot Jason...would love to see what you can do with it now that the challenge is over...
wouldn't think you would want to do too much, it is elegant in its simplicity...

I like the way you tilted the horizon to follow the curve of the "6".

OK, a 6, but the rock is not minimal.

That is too cool. Love the idea and title sold the picture. Great shot!

What a great find - I am so unobservant that without your title I would not have seen it. Love the black and white setting.

Very Zen - not sure this will pass for minimalism though.I like it.

Fantastic shot and b&w treatment, regardless of the challenge topic and especially given the Minimal Editing rules. Works for me ... now clean your sensor and perpare a nicely post process version for after the challenge! :)

Elegant and simple. One of my favorites. (You have a sensor dust spot above the horizon on the left and another about in the middle. Next time clone these out. It's legal to do this.) Beautiful photo.

nearly perfect.....maybe if the horizon was straight you would have got a 10 from me.

Pretty cool 6. Interesting interpretation. The six is minimally seen in the image, but is it the subject? Once it is pointed out it might be. I may have to come back and rethink this.....in any event, it is a great photo.

Nice, but I wish the horizon was not tilted.

I thought "6, what an odd title for a picture?" Then I saw it! The shape of the water with the rock making the center hole. It takes a great eye to see a pattern like that so kudos to you for spotting it. First impression (before I saw the 6) is that it is very minimilistic with the rock being the focal point of the scene. The critique I had for it was that the inclusion of the sky and horizon really detracts from the simple beauty in the forground. Yes, if ONLY you could crop it out such that the water, rock and textured forground made up the whole of the composition! But wait could there have been away to do it legally within the rules? I wonder if you had composed your shot where you had the camera high up and looking down at a 45 degree angle could you have gotten this shot of a "6" with just the water, rock and textured sand filling the frame. Mayhap there might have been a rock for you to climb to get to higher ground to achieve the looking down angle - maybe even a ladder if this was a planned shot (yeah, I know it is a crazy idea to bring a ladder to a beach:-) ) Hmmm, mayhap climbing on top of your car if the scene is close enough to the parking lot...just spitting out ideas that might help you achieve this same shot without the sky & horizon in it when you composed it in your viewfinder. I know tis 20/20 hindsight. Nonetheless this is a above average shot but without the sky & horizon in it, it would move into the exceptional category. 7
