 Wow! Now that's something to wake up to - a ribbon! At this moment the family is whooping and making a lot of noise.

Okay this is what happened in this shoot: this is my 9 year old son (you will start recognising him in my work). He is a model aeroplane enthusiast. He has been using my bedroom desk to work at lately. This is positioned directly in front of a large window the width of the table. So natural light, coming through a car port just outside (has that opaque corrugated plastic stuff on the roof) - a homemade, involuntary soft box if you will. He is right handed, but after a few shots all I was getting was back of hand, and so I asked him to "pretend" and use his left hand for a moment. We don't do pretence very well in our house. He obliged but was finding it difficult to get on with painting - hence the very focused attention.

Was the camera on the table???

No it was on a tri-pod adjusted to the exact height of the table and I lowered the lense to be resting on the table top...this somehow gave the illusion more successfully that the camera was in fact on the table. When it stood on the table, I had all manner of problems trying to hold it and keep the "nose" from diving downward. It was just that much simpler to go the tripod route.

Post Processing: simple stuff - crop, channel mixer to convert to black and white, sharpen and sharpen again. Reduce size, sharpen, save for web.

Oh my! This is absolutely wonderful. In a challenge of dreary pictures of objects placed on a table (mine is one of those), this truly delights! What a lovely portrait! Light is perfect as is the B&W. Thanks for this!

Very nice image. Captures the concentration and intensity of the work. Appears that the focus was sharpest on the enamel, not the plane, which does take away the proper focus in this image. Great tones. Nice contrast of black, grey and white.

Wasnt planning on commenting tonight but I felt compelled to with this one. I really REALLY like this. By farthe best image in the challenge IMO. Such a great natural pose/capture, excellent b&w editing and wonderful composition. On top of that it just makes me feel good. Bumping up to a 10 from my first go aroun dof 8 and adding to my faves. Good luck with this one!
