This is a church in south central Louisville just around the corner from Churchill Downs. Converted to b/w using channel mixer. As you can see, my conversion skills aren't what they should be. Not alot of foreground in this shot because there was a car parked right in front.

a very nice image. i think the sky could be a little more dramamtic, and there seems to be a slight halo around the church (purposeful???). the b/w conversion is nice, but a tiny bit flat. i usually use two layers of hue/sat, or one layer hue sat, one of selective colours. then, on the first layer of hue/sat i crank all the lightness of each colour douwn to 0. that seems to add a good deal of depth. if masking is allowed (advanced or my own work) then the second layer is for adjusting any things i dont want that dark, using a layer mask. selective colour can help with playing with the tones as well.

I'm working on my b&w skills, too, Todd, it's what I used to shoot in film (almost exclusively unless I was doing snapshots), but I just can't get it right in digital. Anytime I try, I'm just not happy with the results. For this, I would have tried to pick up a bit more detail of the bricks; unless you look really closely, you almost can't see the lines (that may be a function of resizing, I haven't been doing this seriously in digital to know for sure), but I'm guessing the color version shows these quite clearly. This is one of my frustrations in going from color to b&w with desat (by channel mixer or another method). Anyway, that's one thing I may have tried. I like the shot, by the way!

The crop helps the steps lead you right up into the photo. Good job.

It looks to me like you worked the contrast about right to get the doors to have at least a little detail for this image. I agree that a little darker, and dodge the area with the doors would be a little better if you have the tools for that.
Winter offers opportunities for this type photos not available in the summer or spring when the trees are all filled out with leaves.

Nice looking building. It does appear a bit flat, maybe more contrast.

I think this is a great conversion... the top portion of the picture is just slightly too light for my preference... but that's just me. Overall this is a great picture, and the advice already given about asking Bear for help with architecture is a great idea.

Nice use of black and white. I might bump up the contrast a little. I like the trees leaning in from either side of the frame.

Nice way to get a good composition to hide an obstruction. Anyway, the church is a very good subject. I am not good with architectural shots so can't give you many hints. I would recommend trying to see if Bear_Music can give you some tips on getting better building shots. That was the kind of photographer he used to be.
My opinion, composition is really good, but a bit more contrast in your highlights and shadows would give the image a bit of snap. Also, if you have a dodge function on your editing, you might try to dodge a bit of the front to make better detail on the doors .

I think the angle is good. I'm always against alot of forground cluter unless it's flowers. Nice shot.
