With Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, we are full swing into preparations. One of the major projects associated with this event is the extension of the commuter train out to the airport. Currently, the airport-downtown route is done (for public transit) via bus. This new commuter train will cut the transit time drastically. Commuter trains in Vancouver (also known as skytrains) run on raised tracks, usually some 50 feet in the air. This crew is preparing the ground where the pylons will be built.
As an interesting aside, yes we're hosting the WINTER Olympics, and yes, this picture was taken in FEBRUARY. The city of Vancouver might get one snowfall a year, maybe an inch, maybe for one day. This year was particularly bad and the snow lasted about a week. We don't expect any more snow either, just rain. However, head north 10 minutes into the mountains and you've got anywhere from 2 to 6 meters of snow. :-)

Timmies!

Oh and I like the picture. If only we didn't have to drive around the construction.

great shot! almost preturnaturally sharp with the blurring in the background.

This truck jumps off the page! Nice shot.

Did you use a Gaussian blur here on the back 40 to get the DOF down?

That's the way to enjoy snow--after a 10 minute drive!

Love the colors so bright.

Great truck, the colours really pop out at you....where can I get a pair of overalls like that???

Wow...Love the colors and the shapness of this shot.

man that selective blurring kick ass!

This photo really pops, both with the color and DOF.

Yes, the background is blurred using photoshop. I know it looks fake, but at one photo a day, quick and dirty is the only way to go. It's just good enough to get the effect I wanted (making the machine pop out) so I stopped playing with it and sent it in. Glad you like it.

That's a serious looking milling machine. Like the story with the image. Good use of DOF to put the machine so sharply out of the background.

this is just a very different shot from your first one, but excellent none the less!!!
love this photograph ... love the composition and colours .. love the dof and the way it makes the subject so in your face .. i feel like that piece of machinery is just about to come out of my monitor ... excellent ....

I really like the DOF in this shot and the bright pops of color. Nice job.

I LOVE photos like this: Bold candid pictures of workmen doing their thing. This is awesome. And I love the story that goes with it. People just don't appreciate all that goes into preparing for those games, do they? Imagine all this hustle and bustle 3 full years before the event. I love Vancouver! :)

Perfect focus, nice colors and nice little story to go with it.

This is a really clear shot....did you blur the background in photoshop? Good job.

Striking subject.......really leaps out! I like the blurring of the background, too. A pleasing pic with an interesting story.
