The Washington, DC Metrorail system has essentially one design for the underground stations, as shown in this shot:

But the stations above ground have some variety. This is the East Falls Church stop, where I live. From here it's a straight shot on the Orange Line to Federal Triangle, where I work.

The Metrorail system's 106 miles and 86 stations make it the 2nd largest in the U.S. More than 1/3 of DC's federal employees use it to commute. Because of DC's placement, people ride it from two states (Maryland and Virginia) and DC itself (DC isn't part of any state). Ridership was 206 million last year. Loads more info is available from this PDF file.

I love riding Metro. It takes about 20 minutes each way. My home stop is near the end of the line and my work stop is "upstream" from the busiest stations, so I almost always get a seat. That lets me read, do a little work, and daydream about my next shot. :) It's a treat to take my daughters on the train, who love it.

For those wondering about the low angle, this camera has a wonderful flip-out LCD screen. I just put the camera on the ground and knelt over the screen.

Hi Jeffrey,
Thumbing through your DC photos makes me a bit nostalgic. I particularly like the angle and PP you chose on this one. Has almost the feeling of a bunker.

Yeah..I like shots of the big cities. It's so different from where I have always lived. Very interesting.

I never was that good at headstands, and definitely could not compose pics that way.
Good choice with the low angle for this shot.

Were you on your belly like a snake? :op Great perspective and wonderful urban scene. Thanks for sharing the story, too!

What a great story. I love trains so much -- but it seems like such a different life to me to think about having to take metros to work. San Antonio is a big city, but in some ways, it is still so "small town". This is really a great photo!

Sweet, I'm in Centreville. Nice shot. Good thing I'm not the only crazy person around here in Virginia taking odd pictures. :-)

The metro is great. I wouldn't go near DC without it.
