Greetings from the Critique Club:
I really liked this image from book titles, and scored it higher than most if not all other images I scored, so there's not a lot I can say to explain why it didn't place higher. I think the composition is excellent, the choice of B&W as well. Though now, thinking about it, it might have worked even better in sepia for an old fashioned look. Other minor details for perfection: the coveralls could have been a bit rattier, or maybe at least "shorter fitting" and the paint brush could have been visible. Of course, at the risk of ruining a good fence, technically, he should have been whitewashing the fence, so a white pain on the brush might have been a good start, and then just show the bristles.
Lastly, the technical capture is excellent, but maybe some directional lighting and shadows might have given it more pop.
But these are just thoughts to improve an already EXCELLENT photo. |

I just love this idea. Well set up, I like the use of B&W - gives a realistic feel to the shot. I just wish the crate didn't look so 'new', but now I'm picking. :-) |

You did a good job setting this up. pretty and almost real. and the b/w is right. The one thing I don't like is, there he stands with his paint brush, and not a drop of paint is on the fence. It sorta shatters the illusion. |

Got the title from looking at the picture. Could have used some whitewash actually on the fence. Good time to use the B&W. |

I like this shot ... it is classic Tom Sawyer. The barefeet are a great effect. |

Nicely done. The way he's holding the brush seems a little odd and focus seems soft. Could do with moving the crate a touch to the right - I think it would strengthen composition a touch. |

fantastic. I really like this one.. Could have been even greater by removing the lable from the can, and increasing the tones so the child stands out more |

this is a picture of the content of the story, not a picture of the title as the challenge asked for. otherwise very good. |

Nice idea for this challenge. Composition is also good... I think the image may be a tad overexposed, but other than that looks good :) |

I woulda used an old looking bucket instead of the contemporary paint can. the stand looks kinda new too. His clothes could be a little more torn, but other than that, it's a very nicely composed photo that reminds me very much of that book. 8 |

yeah, but that's not tom sawyer is it? you would never call the photo that if it wasn't for the challenge, which, of course, wasn't the challenge. still, it's great and I'm giving you an 8. |

His grip on the brush looks a little funny -- maybe if he'd been holding it up. Tom's also frequently pictured in a tattered straw hat. Also, although the light looks strong, it looks a bit harsh -- logical since it's likely Winter and not Summer lighting. A Sepia or Duotone treatment may have made this look a little sunnier ...
Overall a good representation of a classic scene from the book. |
