This is the other view from my front window, along the road to The Boilermaker Arms, the cream building at the top of the road. I don't live far from the place where Stevenson's Rocket was tested (the first steam engine) and the railway was a vital part of industrial Britain. Sutton (this part of St Helens) played a major role as engines were built and repaired here. There are also numerous coal mines now no longer mined, and the railways were necessary for distributing the coal. I also do genealogy and have found numerous ancestors who either worked on the railways or who were miners, in fact the actual estate I am currently living on my direct ancestors worked, lived and died. It is strange to think that I have gone halfway around the world and back and I have come back to the place of my roots!!...................Anyway this is what working class Britain looks like.

Thanks for the explanation - it really helps me understand a bit of your corner of the world. :)

This is a nice shot of your town. Is an "Arms" a bar?

I like this! the cloudy day gives a quiet sleepiness to the town.

I love this photo! It really shows what your area is like. I find the vehicles parked on the sides of the road interesting, they're not all pointing the same way. Around here if you are parked the wrong way on the side of the street you will get a ticket.

Nice piece of history here, great feeling and view of this working class town. It's crazy to think back in the 18th century and wonder how it was then. I love this. It has emotion and meaning.

That's a nice bit of history of where you live and a photo that gives a real "feel" for where you live.

Jane, I LOVE LOVE this photo! This photo really gives us a sense of what "where you live" looks like! This is so European looking, but I can't for sure put my finger on why. I guess the arthictecture and the beautiful old feel to it. Anyway, this just has an awesome look to it!

Nice history. The buildings are nicely composed and in vivid color. Now you just need to fix the sky :)

Nice comment, and it looks like you live in a neighborhood of good people. The roof on the building center right looks a bit odd with tile on one side and not the other. I have found that my ancestors were in the area where I live now.
I see that they still park on the left in the UK.
