Greetings from the Critique Club!

I think you had a great idea here, and selected a good set of elements to give us the feel for the book. I also like the choice of B&W here.

On the technical side, there are a couple of things that can be improved here. I don't think the light reflection in the glasses is needed if done intentionally, and at best distracts a bit, especially because I can see some detail in it, i.e., the bulb.

The wand itself is the major problem I see here. It's overexposed, and I don't think it's placed optimally in the image. It's almost as if it's arranged to be the nose, the glasses the eyes, and the rock the mouth, making a face, which distracts a bit. I am not sure how I would arrange them without some playing, but I would think I might have tried the wand coming in from one corner, and the other objects symmetrical on the other diagnoal. But I would have to experiment to see what worked best. Some other suggestions:
1) A dark, nonreflective base and background would have given this some extra pop
2) A sheet over the light source and putting it back would have diffused the light and eliminated the reflection. A circular polarizer might have also been effective here.

Glad to see such a creative entry and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I like the basic use of the elements to make a face. I love the effect of the lights in the glasses! I'm not sure that it call comes together though I fear that I can't put my finger on why.
High marks for the originality though!

The reflected light in the glasses is kind of cool, but the rest isn't so hot. The wand is way blown out and the top of the stone is out of focus. Also looks oversharpened.

Sometimes you guys surprise me. Here I was, thinking how the light on the glasses are really distracting, but you placed them perfectly. The only thing I would change; should be in portrait orientation to make it more obvious.

I think stone should be in sharp focus as it is the subject. Nice arrangement of objects.

Are the white oval reflections part of the image, or just reflections? This one is a bit flat - it may have worked better if you'd set it up in such a way as to create more of an impression of depth. I'm not sure that B&W suits this one, because there isn't a great tonal range. Given that it's a recent book color would have probably been more appropriate anyway.

I like the BW, color would have distracted from the composition.

this is a picture representing the content of the story, not a picture of the title.

Those reflections... You need some kind of defuser for that light.

Not to be pedantic, but wasn't it the philosopher's stone?

A challenging title for BW. A bit out of focus too. The Glasses had a good impression of light eyes, but the stone and the other object... may be a pen... is blurry and apear not to be intentional, despite of your further comments.
