The bit catching the light on the left is distracting, when so much else is completely black

too much contrst. I think if you were able to see the microscope a little more it would make the photograph more interesting.

nice lighting and composition. love the way the green from the leaf stands out from the rest of the B&W surrounding.

Great photo, but obviously doesn't fill the frame and I'm not sure the negative space really adds anything. Did you consider a tighter or square crop to either move the subject away from the centre or fill the frame?
