Pic was taken on an outing to Chinese New year festival stuff in melbourne australia. Was my first time at street photography, and I'm fairly sure i messed it up :P ... Biggest problem was that I was with a group of people, so I had to keep moving. I realised though that the best shots came from picking a spot, getting to know how people move around that area, and where the light naturally falls to create good lighting. This is also the first time I'm using the 50mm 1.8 in low light conditions, and I have to say I'm amazed at its performance. A mistake I made was once it became pitch black, I bumped the iso up to 800 thinking i'd need it. But iso400 would have been enough right through till pitch black I think, as if it was too dark for iso400, I wasn't going to get a pic at 800, and all the people near any sort of light were getting excellent shutterspeeds (eg this one was 1/640).
I got the 50mm 1.8 as one of those "every says you gotta get it" sorta lenses, and I've used it for shallow DOF before, but its low light capabilities are also amazing.... now to try the old canon 1.0 ;)

- raw w/crop
- NN
- Vignetting around the guy sparing food and arm
- general levels/curves/hsl
- dodge/burn face/hair a lot as the smoke meant I lost a lot of contrast here
- specific levels on face and food to lighten a little
- HSL set to colorise, and desat'd a bit from a certain hue for that sepia look
- resize+very light USM |

You captured his face very well here, shrouded by the steam from his cooking. |

interesting lighting. really like how the smoke is encircling him. as far as street-like, his environment of just the grill doesn't feel global enough to me to really fit the category. still feels more like just a portrait. still a nice image |

a little heavy-handed on the dodge/burn for my taste. I wish there had been more of the food visible. would have helped with the context. nice shot overall. |

Where's the "street" in this picture? For what I know the guy can be BBQing on his private deck. |

That steam/ smoke definitely adds interest. Were the left and right edges quite that dark or have you burned them in? Interesting portrait though I'd prefer to see a touch more of what he's cooking too to give a stronger sense of context. |

Oh, I want to see more of his surroundings ... more of his environment ... |

If it weren't for the name street in the title, I wouldn't have that feel at all. He could be inside. I'd pan back and have more of the movement of the city street going on around him, to illustrate that he is actually in an urban setting. |
