Tried to do something with the sky here; ended up with levels, curves, selective color, contrast, sharpening and maybe something else, but not a thrilling result. Someone mentioned "multi layer" but I have no idea what that is. Just when I've learned one thing, I see I need to learn ten more!

Anyway . . .

. . . the University of East Anglia (where I teach, though I am not there much this term as I am on sabbatical/study leave) has a student newspaper. The name? Concrete. Take a look, you'll pretty much get the idea. Lots of concrete buildings and walkways.

Though I'm not there much, I will be back, with hopefully sun and clouds, and will get some more shots another day.

Interesting building, with the stariways going directly into the 2nd and 3rd floors. I guess there is not much that you can do with a sky like that. You have to have something to begin with to make it look good.
When you are traveling, where you are is where you live at that moment, unless something very unfortunate happens to you. So, keep shooting and posting while you travel. It will be good to see your trip in images here.
re pineapple's post. Maybe it is the depressing sky that causes that.

I sometimes have a hard time with the sky too, especially on a bright but cloudy day. I do like the buildings and the students walking around.

That university was infamous for having the highest suicide rate of any British university, at one time. I am speaking of the mid 80s in the last century when I was a student at London University.

You can also make adjustments directly in your camera. If you have a contrast setting, a sharpness setting and a saturation setting, try adjusting your contrast way down and your sharpness way up.

I have trouble with skies, too. I hear that it helps to do layers, except I haven't figured that out, eyt. Meanwhile - I like the angle you have here. Did you try adding a bunch of contrast after converting to b/w? I just tried it and I think it looks pretty good in b/w. The sky just is colorless and contourless - I don't think the b/w is going to make it worse.
