This was shot over the weekend as part of a photoshoot I did for my friend, Sara. She has two solo shows she has written and performed and she needed production stills to send off to festivals, so we set up moments from both plays and photographed them.

This photo is a moment in a scene from her brilliant and provocative solo show, The Jailer's Daughter and Other Mad Fools Cracking their Livers to Pieces for Love. After the photoshoot I realized that: a) girls are weird, and b) any one of these shots would work well for the literalisms challenge.

I'm still quite new to photography. I don't own any lights or know what makes for good bounce material or anything like that. I only have the lense that came on my camera and know nothing of filters. But when friends ask me to do things like this for them I am honored and more than willing because its always good practice and I end up learning a lot.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

I think this photo works pretty well as a promo shot for Sara's show. The camera angle, slight tilt, and paper dolls suggest it will be rather zany (the title suggests the same thing, so I assume this is the case). The use of dolls also indicates that the solo show is not a soliloquy, but has multiple characters; an important fact for someone making a decision about her show.

The composition is good; the cropping and vertical format work well. I even like the light strip in the background; it adds interest to an otherwise boring background without being distracting. The focus and DOF are also good. The lines from Sara's fingers and facial features all point to the dolls, making them the center of interest. But they are a bit out of focus, keeping the viewer's eye from sticking there and allowing it to go back to Sara's face, which is in focus and interesting. The effect is perfect; the characters are what make the show interesting, but it is Sara that gives them life.

What isn't good is the lighting, one of the most important aspects of photography. You don't have to own fancy studio lights; just learn how to use household lamps effectively. The goal in most images is to have even lighting with a single set of shadows pointing in a consistent direction. Use a bright "key light" to cast the shadows and a less bright "fill light" or a bounce to lighten the shadows and make the lighting even.

Wonderful pose. The grainy nature of the shot detracts a bit. 9

How true indeed! Good, clean photo. The lighter stripe in the upper right background is a little distracting. I like the paper puppets.

Interesting shot, though I don't believe this is a llteralism. It's just a fact ;-)

Might have been good to run this through neat image to reduce the noise; though it's also possible you just have too high a JPEG compression ratio.

It seems like the ISO or something could have been lowered, I notice a little graininess. Could just be my eyes ;)
I have to point out the out-of-place strip on the wall, I wish it weren't there =/
Nice job, I like this one. I really like the capture of this girl's face. The paper dolls are great!
