I'm lucky enough to have a polished black granite kitchen work-surface and a willing flatmate to help me with my pyromaniac antics :)

Editing:
Levels and Curves, with a crop from jpg (never liked raw conversion for simple shots)

Hi, I'm writing this without reading the other comments. I'm not one to put down an image because it is cliche; I do love to shoot bugs after all :D The cliche here would be "fire and ice". Seems to me another "fire and ice" ended up in the top 10.

I think the problem here is the technical ability of the shot. It is pretty blurry and does not invoke any kind of dynamic feeling to it. It's just a shot of fire and ice, unfortunately. Next time, try to set up a shot that has more tension in it.

Back to shooting bugs.

You turn! Why did you like it so much? And to repeat a cliche, what really matters is that you liked the shot.

I agree with the others comments about the reflection, I like it. One thing I may have done differntly is to have bigger flames in the back with *maybe* one or two more cubes out front.

Though, I am not sure I would be brave enough to have a much larger open flame in my house :)

Nice contrast and cool reflection. I think it's a great concept and you almost nailed it. The ice cube looks a little muddy and yellowish. The fire is interesting and colorful, but I find myself wishing at least some of it were in focus. Those are the reasons that the subjects don't hold my attention for very long.

The large amount of negative space doesn't do much for me either. A horizontal crop might have been better suited to this setup; with the ice cube on the intersection of thirds and the fire along the lower third line.

I'm envious of your granite. It's sure to provide you with many great opportunities for reflection shots. Don't be discouraged. My photos never score as high as I expect them to, either:)

I really like your idea of comining fire and ice, but the composition isn't the best. maybe is you used an iceicle(the pointy ones that hang from the roof) instead of and ice cube. 8
