This was not straight out of the camera as someone thought. I had to adjust the exposure by lightening up the rock and left upper grass. I also had to adjust color using a color correction because it was too blue. I also had to crop the image, and do a bit of dodging and burning on the snow to really enhance the sculpted appearance and the lovely play of shadows and highlights. Also had to focus the snow only a bit better, and I had to reduce the jagged highlights that occurred on the ice. Needless to say, the score on this one does not show the beauty or difficulty on this piece.

Hi June, I'll admit I originally gave this a 5 but didn't comment. I do like the sparkly snow, and the delicate wave pattern in the snow, and I can appreciate how hard it was to get the exposure balanced. Unfortunately, the voters don't vote on how difficult an image was to produce. A couple of my best scores came when I put something on a table, shot 10 shots, picked the best one, cropped and adjusted the contrast. I've spent hours on other things that scored poorly.

I think on this shot I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be focusing on. My eye is drawn to the ice and plants, which has the most contrast, but isn't the most attractive part of the picture. Since I don't know what the rest of the scene looked like, I can't really second guess, but I think I would have tried to shoot from a different angle, maybe lower, and get more of the snow patterns, and less of the ice and dirt.

I think what would really have helped is to shoot in better light. You did stuff in post to help but I think it couldn't correct the lighting that was present. What I really do like is how you captured the sparkle of the snow very well. And I like the title. I went on a walk not too long ago and was compelled to take shots of snow and puddles and melting ice.. it is very "essence of winter"y.

Maybe there's "too much" going on here, with the viewer's attention divided between the rock, ice, and snow. It's a little hard to get "oriented" since different elements seem to slant in different directions, which may cause the viewer to feel uncomfortable or off-balance.

Hmm the burning on the snow is porrly done I'm afraid. It looks like ash has been rubbed on the snow. I can see what you were going for with trying to enhance the shadows on the snow, but as this was advanced editing you would have gotten a better result from applying different contrast masks to different areas of the photo.

Regarding the snapshot comments - Standing there pointing the camera down at something goes a long way towards making something appear like a snapshot in the sense that there was little to know thought put into finding the best angle to take the picture from, etc. Walk up, point down, click.

Part of the score is due to the composition. First, nothing really jumps out and you entered this in a Free Study. Something must grab the voter by the eyes and smash their head into the monitor. It has to be that good.

Second, try as I might, I can't see that any classic rules of composition were given even a cursory nod here (which again reinforces the snapshot feel).

The beaeuty of the piece is, of course, entirely up to the interpretation of the voters. The difficulty of the piece, using your words, is not being voted on at all that I can see. Not on DPC anyway.

Anyway, you are obviously bitter about the score. Hope these comments help. If you are shooting for high scores there are some very concrete things you can do to aid you in that area.

Nice reflection that you were able to capture in the water.

Not a bad image but seems a little "snap shot-ish". It lacks the "wow" factor many look for in a free study challenge, IMHO. I like the pattern of the snow to the ice to the ground/rock.

Seems to be straight out of the camera

Great exposure to keep all details in the highlights and shadow - great tech skills.

The snow is a bit blue. Is it intentional?
Nice shadows

Nice contrasts and white balance, I like the light reflection off the ice in the middle of the shot.
