meet mr johnson. he's 88 years old, and has never had indoor plumbing.

he has qualified for a state-backed goochland county program that will build him a new house to replace the 3-room, 400 sq ft house he's been living in since 1947. the new house will have plumbing.

his house is less than 10 miles from a house, which, due to 'marital issues', is on the market for, um, 11.5 million dollars. well, it should be. after all, it is 38 THOUSAND square foot CASTLE (literally). here's its living room.

you really have to see my entry large to get the full impact. i think it's one of the most incredible shots i've ever taken. but that's just me ;-)

Thanks!!! for the comments and the votes. i really didn't expect this to do well as it's not really dpc-friendly ;-)

This deserved a touch higher placement in my book. AWESOME. I hope Mr. Johnson enjoys his new house. He most certainly deserves it. I'd take him a new set of towels. ;~D

Awesome Skip!! Couldn't guess this was yours, thought it might be a Goodman shot. Amazing find and fantastic work, IMO underrated here.

Outstanding shot, Mr Rowland. Hopefully this was used in a story about Mr Johnson. And hopefully you'll follow up on the story when he gets his new house, too. Thanks again for giving us something real!

I did not expect to see my image ahead of this one - even if only by one place. I felt this was such a powerful image on its own - and now enhanced even more by your image comments. This should have been higher.

I like this shot but I'm not too sure about the position of the old man. I do like the light behind his head and his hand but seating him to one side, perhaps at a table would have shown more of his surroundings and made him look more at ease. On the other hand posing him in such a confrontational pose, makes ME feel uncomfortable and therefore evokes an emotion in me, which is what I think makes a good photograph. The addition of grain adds to the mood and is wonderful.

One of my top picks of this challenge. Great portriat. The mellow grain really adds to the mood. This pic just feels right. 9

Great environmental portrait. Very good backlighting with blocked light source. It surrounds him with blown-out areas of light. Excellent effect. This might work without grain, but the grain is appropriate to the mood and looks "natural", not added on later. 9

Tee hee this is what Morgan Freeman's brother looks like... but I expect you've had that comment already. This is so striking. I love the very candid face on pose with the surroundings clearly in view. Photojournalist shot that would do well in "Drum magazine".

simple but very effective composition. I like the use of wide-angle lense which makes the kitchne so tiny

This is excellent. I love the intensity of it. His sparse setup just screams for the grain. Wonderfully done. I hope he has a nice dinner.
