Greetings from the Critique Club :)
Hi WildBlue...
Cute pooch here :) He doesn't look particularly surprised though... I think you may have suffered in the challenge because of that.
In the future, you should include your exposure settings and your own thoughts and ideas in the photographer's comments box if you want to request CC critiques :)

Taking a good shot of an animal can be a bit tricky. would have had a great deal more impact for me if the dog seemed in to it as well. The lighting works, as does the festive feeling of the ribbon...has a portrait feel to it.

Awwwwwwwwwwww! How cute is he/she? A wonderful surprise for anyone! The shot isn't bad overall but the dog is over lit against the black background. Maybe a more direct, head on shot with a softer light? A 6 |

My first thought was that it was the dog's birthday, and he was surprised. Which didn't work for me. Now, I'm thinking maybe he's the birthday surprise for somebody? Even at that, it's not a terribly engaging shot. Nothing very cute, no eye contact with the pup, no context (beside the ribbon) to tell me how the surprise worked. The black background seems to leave the dog issolated - almost gives it a sense of melancholy that contradicts the title. Technically speaking, its an OK shot, no obvious flaws, though maybe the face is just a tad hot against the black background. |
