Greetings from the Critique Club.

Well, I have to say that this shot does have that "surprise" look to it. It makes me wish you had included some information in the comments eluding to what she was doing to look so surprised. :)

I think some commenters are confusing focus with motion blur. The part of the exposure that was caught by the flash is certainly in focus. What they're referring to is the motion blur caused by a combination of ambient light and a longer shutter speed. At any rate, I think this movement helps emphasize the element of "surprise" in that, thanks to the motion blur, we can see that she's actually in the process of turning around/being caught.

People have mentioned the red eye, and that is an unfortunate side effect of shooting with an on camera flash so I won't go on about it.

The composition is ok, nothing spectacular. I think this image could have been improved with a lower camera angle. Right before you "surprised" her, you could have knelt (is that a word?) down to her level. That way we're getting a little different point of view as opposed to a "normal" point of view. To me, things like that add a different dimension to an image.

I hope this helps,
Quadrajet

Good expression. A shame that the editing rules wouldn't let you get rid of the red eye. I think I would have considered cropping the right and putting her on the right 1/3 of the frame.

the red eye! the peach eye! the focus!

Wonderful expression on the child's face. But too blurry, red-eye!?

Rut Roh! Busted! :)

A cute expression on her face, makes you wonder if you really did catch her doing something she wasn't supposed to be doing. The red eye is a shame and the motion on the left is also a bit distracting. A 6

Nice subject. Focus is an issue - the edges of her hair are blurred - and she's got a pretty serious case of red-eye as well. Some retakes on this to try to get a clearer picture (of the girl: the background being blurred out is good) might have been good.

A cute child:) the problem is no spot editing...so no way to fix the red eye:) she does look like she has been caught doing something.

Photos with youngsters are much more prone to contain redeye. To eliminate/reduce the redeye its best to try and set your flash to redeye removal The other thing is understanding that redeye is caused by looking at or near the flash wenn it discharges.

I'm sorry the dreaded red eye happened. Does your camera have a feature to eliminate that? 4

I particularly like the red-eye and the motion blur :)

Yes, she does look like she's up to mischief, and perhaps she's blurred because she never stop moving. But the kitchen floor background and the chair legs are distracting, and the red eyes from the flash take away from this beautiful little face.

Little cutie pie. Love the lace and her expression. Still this has a look of guilt and not surprise to me.

...of....

What did she get caught doing??? Other than that the photo is great...a little motion blur and red-eye, but those can be forgiven do to the candid nature of the shot. 6
